Work description and purpose

As part of its rail maintenance program and state of good repair, TTC will be conducting rail grinding along a number of sections of Line 3 Scarborough RT. Beginning as early as July 11, 2018 for approximately two months, crews will deploy a slow-moving rail grinding machine (similar to the vehicle pictured below) nightly to carry out this work. This unit moves slowly along the track, and is quieter in operation than what TTC has used in the past.

This maintenance is intended to improve the current condition of the rail surface and aid in reducing noise and vibration levels, extend the life of the rail, and provide a smoother ride.

Work hours

To ensure that this grinding operation is carried out to its optimum potential, the slow moving rail-grinding unit will be in operation shortly after RT service ends and before it begins the next day -- between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. nightly.

While we cannot eliminate all noise, our crews will do their best to keep levels to a minimum.

TTC service

Maintenance work will take place outside of regular SRT hours. Service will not be affected.
