TTC hosts ninth annual Underground Freedom Train Ride virtually
July 30, 2021
Tomorrow, July 31, the TTC is supporting a Different Booklist Cultural Centre and the Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride Committee to virtually host the ninth annual midnight Underground Freedom Train Ride, commemorating Emancipation Day on Aug. 1.
The event is symbolic of the role the Underground Railroad has played in Canadian history. The theme of this year's event is The Fire Within, focusing on the element of fire and its power to re-kindle and transform. Recognizing Emancipation Day, and Emancipation Month in August, reminds us of how important it is to shed light on anti-Black racism and to stop discrimination in all its forms.
The event usually begins at Union Station and in past years has been attended by well over 1,000 participants. This year, the virtual commemoration will feature contributions including poetry, singing, moments of reflection and remarks by TTC Chief Diversity and Culture Officer, Keisha Campbell.
The Underground Freedom Train Ride is open to the public. Those interested in attending can live stream it beginning at 10:45 p.m. on July 31 on YouTube.
